Yahweh’s promise to David to make a forever king from his offspring was kept and Christ’s death, burial, resurrection, and session as King over all is proof positive. Even though we as his people have been stubborn and rebellious, Yahweh is still faithful to his covenant promises that he made at the fall of humanity in the garden and every other promise after that. He has remembered his hesed, or covenant faithful love and his faithfulness to his people. Yahweh has shown his love and favor for us, his people. He has shown his salvation and his righteousness to all the nations of the earth through Christ. Yet, he also shows his love and grace by providing a substitute to take away their guilt and required judgment. He shows the world how evil sin is and why it must be judged. Through the cross of Christ, the death of his own Son to satisfy his divine justice, he proves or shows the entire world how serious his holiness and perfection are. This salvation is how he demonstrates his righteousness or justice. God has clearly shown the world his redemption through Jesus Christ, and published it to the nations. His powerful salvation was not done in a quiet corner. His amazingly powerful actions, signified by his right hand, and his judgment and salvation, signified by his holy arm have helped or saved us. Though they are his victories, they benefit us. He has won all his battles by his own power in a mighty way.

Yahweh’s right hand and holy arm have won battles and brought about victory. In other words, these things that God has done are wondrous and they were done for us, to our benefit. The reason: God has done wonderful deeds. The psalmist (of course he is a musician and not all are) gives an imperative, or command, to sing a new song to Yahweh. It might have been because something exciting was happening that day, or the day before was absolutely stellar, or a host of other reasons.

Have you ever been in one of those wonderful moods where you just had to sing? It didn’t matter necessarily what you sang, you just had to sing. He will judge the world with justice, and the nations with fairness. Let the rivers clap their hands in glee! Let the hills sing out their songs of joy before the Lord, for he is coming to judge the earth.

Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! Let the earth and all living things join in. Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King! Shout to the Lord, all the earth break out in praise and sing for joy! Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and melodious song, with trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn. The ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. His right hand has won a mighty victory his holy arm has shown his saving power! The Lord has announced his victory and has revealed his righteousness to every nation! He has remembered his promise to love and be faithful to Israel. Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done wonderful deeds. When was the last time you sang a victory song? When was the last time you shouted in victory? Was it the last sports game you were at? The answers to a few questions like this can tell us a lot about ourselves and what we think is the most exciting and wonderful stuff on earth.
